How you pick up your car
Picking up in town suits you if you arrived some other way and only want a car for part of your stay. You can't drive into Chora: the centre is a maze of pedestrian lanes. The supplier brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. If you're staying in the lanes, the handover is at the nearest street a car can reach, and you walk out to it with your luggage.
The Old Port, on the north side of town, is not a ferry pick-up: it's where the Delos boats and the sea bus to the New Port leave from.
Driving and parking
Parking in Mykonos Town
- Old Port car park: the large public car park on the north side of town, by the Old Port bus station, is a 5-10 minute walk from the harbour front. In summer, expect to wait for a space in the evening.
- Fabrika: the car park by the bus station on the south side is closer to the centre, but it is smaller and unpaved, and often full by mid-morning in July and August.
- Prices: both car parks are free at the time of writing.
- Windmills: there are a handful of roadside spaces near the windmills, almost never free in season.
Parking at the beaches
- Most organised beaches have free car parks, many of them unpaved. In July and August they fill by late morning, so arrive early.
- Psarou has very little parking, and a space is hard to find in high season.
- Park once, take the boat: in season, caiques leave Platis Gialos for Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia, so you can leave the car at one beach and hop along the south coast.
On the road
- Narrow roads: the main roads are paved, but the roads down to the beaches are narrow and winding. Be ready to give way on single-lane stretches.
- Super Paradise: the road down to the beach is very steep. Take it slowly in a low gear, both ways.
- Summer traffic: on summer evenings the queues into Chora can stretch for several kilometres, and the drive back from the south-coast beaches can take far longer than the distance suggests. Head back from the beaches early or late.
- Quads and scooters: in summer they're everywhere, often ridden by visitors who are new to them. Give them room, especially on bends and on the steep beach roads.
- Riding one yourself: a helmet is compulsory for rider and passenger on scooters and quads alike. Riding without one costs €350 each, and the rider loses the licence for 30 days. The alcohol limit for scooter and motorbike riders is 0.2 g/l.
- Fuel: there are seven stations on the island. Six are within about 2 km of Chora, on the ring road and the roads to the airport and Ano Mera; the seventh is in Ano Mera. There are none on the north coast or at the east-coast beaches, so fill up before heading to Fokos, Agios Sostis or Lia.
Practical tips
- Why drive: taxis are few for the summer crowds. KTEL buses run from Fabrika to the main south-coast beaches, and from the square behind the OTE building to Ano Mera, Kalafatis and Elia; from the Old Port they go only to the New Port and Agios Stefanos. For the north coast, Fokos and the lighthouse you need your own wheels.
- Which car: a small car is the better choice. The beach roads are narrow, the car parks are tight, and you can't drive into Chora anyway. None of the trips above needs a 4x4, but many beach car parks and the last stretch to Fokos are unpaved: ask the supplier whether the insurance covers them.
- Island hopping: if you'd like to take the car on a ferry to another island, ask the supplier before you book.
Driving rules in Greece
- Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
- Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
- Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
- In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
- Emergencies: call 112.
Places to visit by car

Ano Mera
8 km, about 15 minutes. The main village inland, with the monastery of Panagia Tourliani, founded in 1542.
Armenistis lighthouse
7 km, about 15 minutes, past Agios Stefanos on the north-west tip of the island. The lighthouse has stood there since 1891, and it's a popular place to watch the sunset.
Agios Sostis and Panormos
7-8 km, about 15 minutes, side by side on the north coast. Agios Sostis has no sunbeds or beach bars, just a taverna.Fokos
12 km, about 20 minutes, via Ano Mera. The road is paved most of the way, but the last stretch to the beach is unpaved. There's a single taverna and little else, so take water.
Kalafatis and Lia
12 km, about 20 minutes, via Ano Mera, on the east coast. Kalafatis has a large unpaved car park.
Elia and Kalo Livadi
10-11 km, about 15 minutes, on the south-east coast. Elia has a large car park, partly paved.
Paradise and Super Paradise
5-7 km, 10-15 minutes, the two beaches best known for their beach clubs. Paradise has a paved car park; Super Paradise is down the steep road.
Psarou and Platis Gialos
about 4 km, 10 minutes, next to each other on the south coast. Psarou's parking is scarce; Platis Gialos is where the caiques along the south coast leave from.
Delos, by boat
you can't take a car to Delos. Boats leave from the Old Port, from the small harbour opposite the church of Agios Nikolaos, several times a day in season. The crossing takes about 30 minutes, and boats don't sail in strong winds. The archaeological site has its own ticket, €20 in the 2026 season. Park at the Old Port car park.
Questions and answers
Can I drive into Mykonos Town?
No. The centre of Chora is pedestrian lanes. Leave the car at the Old Port car park on the north side or at Fabrika on the south side, and walk in.
Which port will my ferry use?
Almost always the New Port at Tourlos, about 2 km north of town. Your ticket names the port. If it says the Old Port, tell the supplier: a sea bus runs between the two. After booking, the supplier confirms whether they'll meet you, send directions to their office or send a shuttle.
How far is Mykonos airport from the town?
About 2.5 km by road, 5-10 minutes. The supplier meets you on arrival, sends you directions to their office or sends a shuttle, and confirms which after booking. The airport has only a few free short-stay parking spaces, so if you're meeting there, agree the spot in advance.
Will I find parking at the beaches?
Most organised beaches have free car parks, but in July and August they're full by late morning. Go early, or park at Platis Gialos and take the caique along the south coast.
Can I rent a quad or a scooter instead of a car?
Yes, some suppliers offer them. A helmet is compulsory for rider and passenger, and riding without one costs €350 each. Ask the supplier which licence the vehicle needs before you book. In June 2026 the government announced that only drivers who have held a licence for at least five years would be able to rent a quad.
Can I take the car to Delos?
No. Delos is a separate island, reached by boat from the Old Port in about 30 minutes. Park at the Old Port car park and walk to the boats.
