How you pick up your car
Picking up in town suits you if you arrived some other way and only want a car for part of your stay. You can't drive into the Old Town. Since 14 April 2026 no vehicle without a permit may enter the walled medieval town: only permanent residents with a special permit, and delivery vehicles between 06:00 and 09:00. The rules make no exception for visitors or hotel guests.
The supplier brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. If you're staying inside the walls, the handover is outside them, at the nearest street a car can reach, and you walk in with your luggage.
Driving and parking
Parking in Rhodes town
- The Old Town is closed to visitors' cars (see Rhodes City above). Park outside the walls and walk in through one of the gates.
- Free car park at Akandia: the municipality runs a free car park at Akandia port, with a free minibus via the moat (Tafros), the tourist port and Kolona to the Town Hall. It runs from morning to late evening, with shorter hours at weekends.
- Paid street parking in the centre is marked with blue P signs. Pay at the meter or, since May 2026, on your phone: scan the QR code on the meter or go to parking.rhodes.gr, enter the plate and choose how long. The price is shown before you pay.
- In July and August a space in the centre is hard to find. Leave the car at Akandia and take the minibus.
- Outside Rhodes town parking is usually free, except in Lindos (see Trips).
On the road
- The east coast road from Rhodes town past Faliraki and Kolymbia to Lindos is the island's main road: well surfaced, and the easiest driving on Rhodes. Expect 80 km/h or less on most of it, and lower through villages and resorts.
- The west coast and the hills: the road past Kamiros and Kritinia towards Monolithos is quieter but climbs and winds more, and the hill roads inland, such as the one up to Embonas, are in good condition but winding. An ordinary car manages them; just allow more time.
- Fuel: fill up before heading to the far south or the far west. The last stations are at Lardos, Gennadi and Kattavia in the south-east, and at Embonas, Kritinia and Apolakia in the west. There is none at Prasonisi, and little or nothing between Kritinia and Apolakia, around Siana and Monolithos. Stations take cash and cards.
- Wildfires: in summer a fire can close roads at short notice. In July 2023 fires in the south-east closed roads and some 19,000 people were moved from homes and hotels. Emergency alerts reach phones from 112: follow them, and don't drive towards smoke.
Practical tips
- Which car: a small car is the better choice here. You can't drive into the Old Town or into Lindos anyway, parking in town and at the beaches is tight, and the hill roads wind. A 4x4 isn't needed for any of the trips above.
- Unpaved roads: if you plan dirt tracks to remote beaches, ask the supplier before you book. Many insurance policies exclude damage on unpaved roads (tyres, underbody).
- When to arrive: in July and August, get to Lindos, Anthony Quinn Bay and the Valley of the Butterflies early: their car parks fill as the day goes on.
Driving rules in Greece
- Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
- Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
- Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
- In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
- Emergencies: call 112.
Places to visit by car

Lindos
49 km, about 1 hour 10 minutes down the east coast road. The village is pedestrian-only, so park in the car parks above it or on the road down to the main beach and walk in. Private car parks charge a day rate, about €7. From the village you go up to the acropolis on foot, 20-30 minutes of steep path and steps, or by donkey. In July and August arrive early: the car parks fill.
Anthony Quinn Bay
17 km, about 25 minutes, just past Faliraki. A small cove with limited parking; get there early.
Tsambika
29 km, about 45 minutes, a beach on the east coast with parking close to the sand.
Seven Springs (Epta Piges)
28 km, about 35 minutes, inland from Kolymbia. A valley where you walk through a 186-metre tunnel, in ankle-deep water, to a small lake; a path above the tunnel is the dry way round. Parking by the taverna is limited.
Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes)
25 km, about 30 minutes, on the inland road between Paradisi and Theologos, so an easy first stop from the airport. The butterflies gather in summer, most of all in August. There is a small entry fee and free parking near the entrance; the site closes at the end of October until the next season.
Ancient Kamiros
34 km, about 45 minutes along the west coast.
Kritinia castle
48 km, about 1 hour, further down the west coast, with a car park at the castle. It goes well with Kamiros on the same day.
Monolithos castle
74 km, about 1 hour 25 minutes, on the far south-west coast, past Embonas or Kritinia. Fuel is scarce between Kritinia and Apolakia, so fill up first.
Prasonisi
91 km, about 1 hour 55 minutes, via the east coast and Kattavia, then about 10 km south to the island's southern tip, where a sandy strip joins the cape to a small islet. It's a windsurfing and kitesurfing spot; the centres close in winter. Parking at the end of the road is free. Fill up at Gennadi or Kattavia.
Questions and answers
Can I drive to my hotel in Rhodes Old Town?
No. Since 14 April 2026 only permanent residents with a permit, and delivery vehicles between 06:00 and 09:00, may drive in. The handover is outside the walls, at the nearest street a car can reach, and you walk in with your luggage. To leave the car near the Old Town, use the free car park at Akandia.
Where can I park to visit the Old Town?
At the municipality's free car park at Akandia port, with a free minibus to Kolona and the Town Hall. In the centre, paid street parking is marked with blue P signs; pay at the meter or on your phone at parking.rhodes.gr.
Which harbour will my ferry arrive at?
Blue Star ferries from Piraeus use Akandia, south-east of the Old Town. The smaller Dodekanisos Seaways boats use Kolona, beside the walls, and cruise ships tie up at the central port next to it or at Akandia. Check your ticket and tell the supplier.
How far is Rhodes airport from the town?
About 15 km, 20-25 minutes by car. The supplier meets you on arrival, sends you directions to their office or sends a shuttle, as agreed after booking. The short-term car park is free for the first 20 minutes.
Can I drive into Lindos?
No, the village is pedestrian-only. Park in the car parks above the village or on the road to the main beach and walk in. In July and August get there early.
Is there fuel on the way to Prasonisi?
Yes, but not at the end. Fill up at Gennadi or Kattavia: there is no station at Prasonisi itself. If you go on round the west coast, fill up again before Monolithos.
