How you pick up your car
Picking up in Fira suits you if you arrived some other way, or only want a car for part of your stay. You can't drive to a hotel on the caldera edge. The cliff-side lanes of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia are footpaths and steps, and most hotels there have no parking of their own.
The supplier brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. If you're staying on the caldera, the handover is at the nearest point a car can reach, at the edge of your village, and you walk in.
Fira is also where most cruise passengers come ashore. Tenders land at the old port, and the way up is the cable car or the Karavolades steps, which reopened on 3 August 2026 after a wall beside them collapsed. At the top, in Fira, follow the supplier's directions to their office.
Driving and parking
Parking
- Caldera villages: the cliff-side lanes are car-free. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia each have one or more public car parks just before the village, marked with a blue "P" sign.
- Fira: the public car parks are on the edge of the centre, including one by the high school and others at the south end of town. They fill up on summer evenings, so take the first reasonable space rather than circling.
- Oia: the main car parks are at the eastern entrance, by Agios Georgios church, and near the post office. Some car parks may charge, so check the signs. In July and August they fill quickly as sunset approaches, so arrive by midday or come by bus.
- Imerovigli: small car parks that take patience in summer. There is no parking at the Skaros trailhead.
- Elsewhere on the island, parking is rarely a problem.
- Street parking is allowed unless a sign says otherwise, but never stop where you'd block a bus.
On the road
- The main roads from Fira to the airport, the south of the island and Oia are wide and easy. The narrow parts are the caldera-edge stretch through Imerovigli towards Oia and the village lanes.
- The Athinios road zigzags down the cliff face and is busy with coaches and lorries whenever a ferry is due. Take the hairpins slowly, in a low gear on the way down.
- Buses run from Fira to the villages, the beaches, the airport and the port, on the same narrow roads you use. Where the road narrows, pull in and let them through.
- Sunset: in July and August the road into Oia jams in the hours before sunset, and again when everyone leaves.
- Cruise days: with ships in the caldera, Fira's centre and the Oia road are at their busiest. Up to 30% of cruise passengers are landed at Athinios and taken on by coach, which adds to the port road's traffic.
- ATVs and scooters are everywhere, and many riders are on one for the first time. Give them room.
- At night there is hardly any street lighting outside the villages.
- Fuel: most stations are around Fira and along the road to the airport and Kamari. Fill up the evening before an early flight or ferry.
Practical tips
- Which car: a small car is the better choice. Village car parks are tight and the caldera-edge roads are narrow. None of the trips above needs a 4x4.
- ATVs: the licence you need depends on the vehicle, so confirm it with the supplier before booking. Rider and passenger must both wear a helmet, and riding without one can void your insurance. Many travel insurance policies exclude quad biking, so check yours before you ride. With few street lights, avoid riding after dark.
- Earthquake rules: most restrictions from the 2025 earthquake swarm were lifted in April 2026. At the time of writing, a ministerial decision in force until March 2027 still bans parking at Athinios, keeps the Ammoudi-Cape Agios Nikolaos path closed and fences off a danger zone by the cliffs at Fira's old port. Signs on the spot take priority.
Driving rules in Greece
- Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
- Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
- Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
- In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
- Emergencies: call 112.
Places to visit by car

Oia
12 km, about 20 minutes. Park at the entrance and walk in; for the sunset, go early or take the bus.
Imerovigli and Skaros
4 km, about 10 minutes. Park in the village. The trail to the Skaros rock starts with steep steps from the middle of Imerovigli; allow one to two hours and remember the long climb back up. Signs forbid climbing to the top of the rock itself.
Akrotiri and Red Beach
the Akrotiri excavations are 11 km away, about 20 minutes, with their own car park. The Red Beach car park, by a small church, is 1 km further on. The beach itself is officially closed because of rockfalls, and signs at the path say not to enter. The safe way to see it is from a boat.Megalochori
6 km, about 10 minutes. One of the island's most traditional villages, a maze of steep lanes, with wineries nearby that are open to visitors for tastings.
Pyrgos
5 km, about 10 minutes. The highest village on the island, built around a Venetian castle, with views across the whole island.
Profitis Ilias
8 km, about 20 minutes, through Pyrgos. At 567 m it's Santorini's highest point. The last stretch is a narrow paved road with hairpins and steep drops. There's free parking at the top by the monastery, whose buildings are closed to visitors.Photo: Bernard Gagnon, cropped, CC BY-SA 3.0

Kamari
8 km, about 10 minutes, close to the airport: an organised beach south-east of Fira.Perissa and Perivolos
12 km, about 20 minutes. Organised black-sand beaches on the south-east coast, crowded in summer. The Mesa Vouno headland stands between Perissa and Kamari with no road round it, so driving from one to the other is 14 km.
Vlychada
11 km, about 20 minutes. A sandy beach below pale, wind-carved pumice cliffs, next to a small marina, with a small free car park at the beach.
Questions and answers
Can I drive to my hotel in Oia, Fira or Imerovigli?
Not if it's on the caldera side. The cliff-side lanes are footpaths and most caldera hotels have no parking, so you park at the edge of the village. That's also where the supplier hands the car over, the nearest point a car can reach, and you walk in with your luggage.
Where do I park for the sunset in Oia?
In the car parks at the eastern entrance, by Agios Georgios church, or near the post office. In July and August they fill quickly as sunset approaches, so arrive by midday, or leave the car in Fira and take the bus.
Can I collect the car when my ferry arrives at Athinios?
Yes. The supplier meets you there, sends you directions to their office or sends a shuttle, and confirms which after booking. Parking in the port is banned at the time of writing, so if you're meeting there, agree the spot beforehand, and expect a slow climb up the hairpins behind the coaches.
I'm arriving on a cruise ship. Where do I pick up the car?
In Fira. Tenders land at the old port, which has no road. Take the cable car or the steps up, then follow the supplier's directions to their office.
What licence do I need for an ATV?
The licence you need depends on the ATV, and the supplier will tell you when you book. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, and many travel insurance policies exclude quad biking.
Can I drive to Red Beach?
You can drive to the car park next to the Akrotiri site, about 20 minutes from Fira. The beach itself is officially closed because of rockfalls, so see it from a boat instead.
