How you pick up your car
Picking up in the centre suits you if you spend your first days on foot and only want a car for trips out of the city. The supplier either brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office or a convenient meeting point, and confirms which after booking. Three things shape the handover:
- The traffic ring (Daktylios): on weekdays from October to July, most cars may enter the centre only on alternate days, by the last digit of the plate (see Driving). Agree with the supplier whether the car can come in on your pick-up day.
- Plaka and the Acropolis: most of Plaka is pedestrian, and so is Dionysiou Areopagitou below the Acropolis. If you're staying there, arrange the handover at the nearest street a car can reach.
- Overnight parking: street parking for visitors is limited to 3 hours, so a car collected the evening before a trip needs a garage or hotel space for the night.
Driving and parking
Parking in central Athens
- Visitor bays in the city's controlled-parking zones are paid Monday to Friday 09:00-21:00 and Saturday 09:00-16:00, and free on Sundays and public holidays. You can stay from 30 minutes to 3 hours.
- How to pay: in the City of Athens AthensWay app, which replaced myAthensPass in September 2026. Enter the plate and the duration, and pay by bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Prices rise with the length of stay. The app shows the price before you pay.
- Blue lines mark bays for residents only, whatever older guides say about paid "blue zones".
- For a full day or overnight, use a private garage or your hotel's parking (ask the hotel about the charge when you book the room).
The traffic ring (Daktylios)
- When: from 12 October 2026 to 23 July 2027, Monday to Thursday 07:00-20:00 and Friday 07:00-15:00. Weekends, public holidays and public-transport strike days are free.
- The rule: cars with a plate ending in an even digit may drive inside on even dates, odd on odd dates.
- Where: inside a ring of roads that includes Alexandras, Mesogeion, Syngrou and Peiraios avenues. The boundary roads themselves are open to all.
- Exempt: electric, hybrid, natural-gas and LPG cars, and Euro 6 cars under 120 g/km of CO2 (145 g/km for cars registered from 2021), but only with the sign the supplier gets from gov.gr. We found no exemption for rental cars or visitors.
- Fine: €100.
On the road
- Attiki Odos (airport to Elefsina, through the northern suburbs): €2.55 for a car at the time of writing, paid once on entry. Staffed lanes take cash or bank cards, but not Diners or American Express. e-PASS lanes are for cars with a toll tag: if the supplier's car has one, agree how tolls are settled.
- Tolls on trips out of Athens (for a car, since 1 January 2026): on the Olympia Odos towards Corinth, Elefsina €2.50 and Isthmus €2.10. On the Moreas motorway south of Corinth, Spathovouni €2.95. On the A1 north towards Delphi, tolls at Afidnes and Thiva.
- Speed limits: since January 2026 the limit in towns is 30 km/h on streets with one lane in each direction. Wider roads and main avenues such as Kifisias, Mesogeion and Vouliagmenis stay at 50 km/h. Outside towns it is 90, 110 on expressways and 130 on motorways.
- Bus lanes in central Athens are not for cars, and cameras enforce them.
- Fuel is easy to find in Attica and along the motorways.
Practical tips
- Which car: a small car is easier in central Athens, where visitor bays are few. For the motorways to the Peloponnese or Delphi, any car will do.
Driving rules in Greece
- Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
- Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
- Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
- In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
- Emergencies: call 112.
Places to visit by car

Athenian Riviera
Glyfada is 14 km down the coast (about 20 minutes) and Lake Vouliagmeni 20 km (about 30 minutes). Swimming in the lake is paid: €17 on weekdays and €19 at weekends in 2025.
Cape Sounion
the Temple of Poseidon is 64-67 km away. The coast road through Vouliagmeni, Varkiza and Anavyssos has no toll and takes about 1½ hours. The inland route via Attiki Odos and Markopoulo takes about 1¼ hours, with the Attiki Odos toll. Lavrio, on the way back up the east coast, has the ferries to Kea and Kythnos.
Marathon and Schinias
the burial mound of the Athenians at Marathon is 38 km, about 55 minutes. Schinias, a long beach backed by pine forest in a national park, is 44 km, about an hour. From Rafina port it's 20 km.
Corinth Canal
78 km, about 1¼ hours on the Olympia Odos motorway, with tolls at Elefsina and the Isthmus.
Mycenae
122 km, about 1¾ hours, via Corinth and the Moreas motorway.
Nafplio
141 km, about 2¼ hours. Mycenae (25 km) and Epidaurus (27 km) are both within 40 minutes of it, so a night in Nafplio covers all three.
Epidaurus
137 km, about 2½ hours by the direct road through Sofiko. From late June to August the ancient theatre hosts festival performances on Friday and Saturday evenings: plan for the drive back in the dark, or stay in Nafplio.
Delphi
177 km, 2½-3 hours, by the A1 motorway to Thiva, then through Livadeia and the mountain road past Arachova. A night in Delphi or Arachova makes it easier.
Questions and answers
How much is the toll from Athens airport into the city?
€2.55 for a car at the time of writing, on the Attiki Odos. You pay once, when you join the motorway, in cash or by bank card at a staffed lane (not Diners or American Express).
Can I drive a rental car into central Athens on a weekday?
From mid-October to late July, only on alternate days by the last digit of the plate (Monday to Thursday 07:00-20:00, Friday 07:00-15:00), unless the car has the clean-vehicle sign. Weekends are free. We found no exemption for rental cars, so ask the supplier about the plate and the sign before you book.
Where can I park in central Athens?
In the city's visitor bays, for up to 3 hours, paid in the AthensWay app (Monday to Friday 09:00-21:00, Saturday 09:00-16:00). Blue-lined bays are for residents only. For longer, use a garage or your hotel's parking.
Where do I meet the supplier at Piraeus?
The supplier meets you when your ship docks, sends you directions to their office, or sends a shuttle to take you there, and confirms which after booking. Tell them your ship and gate number when you book. The gates run from E1 to E12 and can be an hour's walk apart; a free shuttle bus runs inside the port from the metro station at gate E5.
Should I pick up at Rafina rather than Piraeus?
For Andros, Tinos or Mykonos, often yes. Rafina is 15 km from the airport, about 25 minutes with no toll; Piraeus is 48 km from the airport, on the other side of Athens.
Can I visit Delphi as a day trip from Athens?
Yes, but it's 177 km each way, 2½-3 hours by the A1 motorway (tolls) and the mountain road past Arachova. Start early, or stay a night.
