How you pick up your car

Santorini airport is on the east side of the island, about 5.5 km from Fira: around 10 minutes by car. When your flight lands, the supplier meets you at the airport, sends you directions to their office, or sends a shuttle to take you there, and confirms which after booking. Add your flight number when you book so the supplier can follow any delay.

There are a few public parking spaces opposite the terminal. In light traffic, Imerovigli is 15-20 minutes from the terminal and Oia 25-30 minutes. The airport is also the closest pick-up for Kamari, whose turn-off is just before the terminal.

Practical tips

  • Fuel before you return: there is a Shell at Exo Gialos on the Oia-Airport road, about 2 km before the terminal. The station by the airport junction has no brand on maps, so check it is open before you count on it.
  • Early flights: the petrol stations we could check close at 21:00 or 22:00 and none is listed as open all night, so fill up the evening before an early-morning flight.
  • Ferry and flight: Athinios port is 10 km from the terminal and Oia 17 km. Allow extra time in summer.

Driving rules in Greece

  • Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
  • Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
  • Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
  • Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
  • In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
  • Emergencies: call 112.

Places to visit by car

Distances from Santorini.

  • Oia

    Oia

12 km, about 20 minutes. Park at the entrance and walk in; for the sunset, go early or take the bus.
  • Imerovigli and Skaros

    Imerovigli and Skaros

4 km, about 10 minutes. Park in the village. The trail to the Skaros rock starts with steep steps from the middle of Imerovigli; allow one to two hours and remember the long climb back up. Signs forbid climbing to the top of the rock itself.
  • Akrotiri and Red Beach

    Akrotiri and Red Beach

the Akrotiri excavations are 11 km away, about 20 minutes, with their own car park. The Red Beach car park, by a small church, is 1 km further on. The beach itself is officially closed because of rockfalls, and signs at the path say not to enter. The safe way to see it is from a boat.
  • Megalochori

6 km, about 10 minutes. One of the island's most traditional villages, a maze of steep lanes, with wineries nearby that are open to visitors for tastings.
  • Pyrgos

    Pyrgos

5 km, about 10 minutes. The highest village on the island, built around a Venetian castle, with views across the whole island.
  • Profitis Ilias

    Profitis Ilias

8 km, about 20 minutes, through Pyrgos. At 567 m it's Santorini's highest point. The last stretch is a narrow paved road with hairpins and steep drops. There's free parking at the top by the monastery, whose buildings are closed to visitors.

    Kamari

8 km, about 10 minutes, close to the airport: an organised beach south-east of Fira.
  • Perissa and Perivolos

12 km, about 20 minutes. Organised black-sand beaches on the south-east coast, crowded in summer. The Mesa Vouno headland stands between Perissa and Kamari with no road round it, so driving from one to the other is 14 km.
  • Vlychada

    Vlychada

11 km, about 20 minutes. A sandy beach below pale, wind-carved pumice cliffs, next to a small marina, with a small free car park at the beach.

Questions and answers

Is Santorini airport open at night?

In summer the airport lists itself as open around the clock. Outside summer the terminal currently opens at 04:00 and closes at 23:00, with flights between 05:45 and 22:45.

Where is the nearest petrol station to the airport?

A small station on the airport access road, a few hundred metres from the terminal, and a Shell about 2 km away at Exo Gialos, on the main road to Fira.

Is there parking at the terminal?

A few free short-stay spaces opposite the terminal, according to the airport. In summer they fill fast, so agree the meeting point with the supplier.

Do I pay tolls on Santorini?
