How you pick up your car
Picking up in town suits you if you arrived some other way and only want a car for part of your stay. Don't plan on driving into the Old Town. Most of its lanes are pedestrian or too narrow for cars, and the municipality asks visitors to leave their cars outside the historic centre in summer. The supplier brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. If you're staying in the Old Town, the handover is at the nearest street a car can reach.
Driving and parking
Parking in Corfu Town
- The Old Town: don't try to park inside. The few spaces are all taken on August afternoons and evenings.
- Spianada car park: the municipal car park on the lower Spianada, next to the Old Palace (Museum of Asian Art), has barriers and a flat fee. Being closest, it fills first, and the evening queue at the barrier can take 20-30 minutes.
- Old Port and New Fortress: these car parks charge a daily rate.
- Free, 10-15 minutes' walk out: the large municipal car park at Lyriko, on Donatou Dimoulitsa street at the southern entrance to town, and the Ionian University car park at Pallada at the northern entrance.
- Street parking: blue lines are paid, white lines are free, and yellow lines mean no parking.
- Evening closures: the town has tried closing the historic centre to private cars on summer evenings and plans a lasting restriction. Follow the signs.
On the road
- No motorways: the main road north from town towards Sidari is two lanes and well surfaced. Most other roads are one lane each way, winding, with blind bends.
- Village and hill roads at Paleokastritsa, Pelekas, Lakones and on Pantokrator can be barely one car wide, between stone walls. Use a low gear downhill and sound the horn before blind corners. Where two cars can't pass, the one going downhill usually backs up to a wider spot.
- North-east coast: the road from Ipsos to Kassiopi runs along the cliffs with many blind bends. Don't overtake on it.
- Coaches and summer queues: tour coaches use the same roads. In summer the road to Paleokastritsa is slow, and the Lefkimmi road jams through Perama, partly from cars parked on bends. Allow extra time to the airport from the south.
- Scooters and quads: give them room on narrow roads. If you ride one yourself, a helmet is compulsory for rider and passenger. Riding without one costs €350 each, and the rider loses the licence for 30 days.
- Fuel: stations are frequent along the main roads, and most close at about 21:00-22:00, with only a few open 24 hours. There are none on the Pantokrator road or on the hill road from Lakones to Pagi.
Practical tips
- Which car: a small car is the better choice on the narrow village and hill roads, and you can't drive into the Old Town anyway. None of the trips above needs a 4x4.
- Ferries: if you'd like to take the car to the mainland or to Paxos, ask the supplier before you book.
Driving rules in Greece
- Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
- Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
- Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
- In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
- Emergencies: call 112.
Places to visit by car

Paleokastritsa
25 km, 35-40 minutes. Coves on the west coast and a monastery on the headland. Parking is limited in high season and the beaches are busiest from about 11:00 to 16:00. The monastery has very few spaces: park below and walk up.
Angelokastro
30 km, 40-50 minutes, via Lakones and Krini. The Byzantine castle stands on a clifftop about 300 m up, 15 minutes' walk from the ticket office. It's open 1 April to 31 October, 10:00-18:00, closed on Tuesdays; a ticket is €10 at the time of writing. Parking is mostly on the verge.
Sidari and the Canal d'Amour
37 km, about 50 minutes on the main road north-west. The rock formations are soft, crumbly sandstone: keep back from the cliff edges.
Kassiopi
36 km, about 50 minutes along the north-east coast. From Kassiopi the north-coast road to Sidari is another 25 km, about 30 minutes, so the two make a loop.
Pantokrator
34 km, about 50 minutes. At 906 m it's the highest point on Corfu, with a monastery and a café at the top. The last stretch is narrow, with hairpins and in places no guardrail. There's almost no parking at the summit, so turn round before you park, or leave the car in Strinilas and walk up.
Achilleion
10 km, about 15 minutes, at Gastouri. The palace is closed for restoration, with works planned to run to 2029; at the time of writing only the gardens open to visitors.
Pelekas and Glyfada
13 km and 17 km, 20-25 minutes, on the west coast. A winding road leads down from Pelekas to Glyfada beach, where the car park sells day tickets in summer.
Agios Gordios
16 km, about 25 minutes, a bay further down the west coast.
Issos and Kavos
in the south, 32 km (about 40 minutes) and 47 km (50 minutes to an hour) along the Lefkimmi road, which is slow in summer.
Questions and answers
How far is Corfu airport from Corfu Town?
Under 3 km by road from the Spianada, about 10 minutes. The supplier meets you on arrival, sends you directions to their office or sends a shuttle, and confirms which after booking. The airport car park is free for the first 20 minutes.
Can I drive to my hotel in Corfu Old Town?
Not in practice. Most of its lanes are pedestrian or too narrow for cars, and the municipality asks visitors to leave their cars outside the historic centre. The supplier brings the car to the nearest street a car can reach, or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. Park at the Spianada car park or another on the edge, and walk in with your luggage.
I'm coming by ferry from Igoumenitsa. Should I land in Corfu Town or at Lefkimmi?
If you're staying in the south, around Kavos, Lefkimmi or Issos, take the ferry to Lefkimmi: about 50 minutes at sea, and you skip the drive down the island. For Corfu Town, the north and the west coast, take the ferry to the New Port. Either way, give the supplier your ship and arrival time.
Is the road up Pantokrator all right in a rental car?
Yes, the road goes all the way to the summit. The last stretch is narrow, with hairpins, and there's hardly any parking at the top, so a small car makes it much easier.
Can I rent a scooter or a quad instead of a car?
Yes, some suppliers offer them. A helmet is compulsory for rider and passenger on both, the fine is €350 each, and the alcohol limit for riders is 0.2 g/l. Ask the supplier which licence the vehicle needs before you book.
