How you pick up your car

Rhodes airport (Diagoras) is at Paradisi on the north-west coast, about 15 km from Rhodes town: 20-25 minutes by car. When you land, the supplier meets you at the airport, sends you directions to their office, or sends a shuttle to take you there, and confirms which after booking. Add your flight number when you book so the supplier can follow any delay.

The short-term car park, about 30 metres from the terminal, is free for the first 20 minutes and charged by the hour after that. If the supplier meets you at the terminal, agree beforehand which of you pays the parking.

If you're not staying in town, you don't need to go through it. From the terminal the Valley of the Butterflies is about 10 km (15 minutes), Ancient Kamiros on the west coast about 19 km (25 minutes), and Lindos about 50 km (1 hour 5 minutes), about the same as from town.

Practical tips

  • The car park: the car park next to the terminal is free for 20 minutes, then 6 euros up to an hour and 9 euros up to two hours. The long-term car park nearby is a little cheaper but takes cards only.
  • Late flights: Rhodes airport is open 24 hours all year, so arrange late and very early hand-overs with the supplier when you book.
  • Towards Lindos: you don't need to cross Rhodes town. A road across the island from the airport joins the Lindos road near Faliraki, about 17 km from the terminal.

Driving rules in Greece

  • Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
  • Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
  • Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
  • Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
  • In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
  • Emergencies: call 112.

Places to visit by car

Distances from Rhodes.

  • Lindos

    Lindos

49 km, about 1 hour 10 minutes down the east coast road. The village is pedestrian-only, so park in the car parks above it or on the road down to the main beach and walk in. Private car parks charge a day rate, about €7. From the village you go up to the acropolis on foot, 20-30 minutes of steep path and steps, or by donkey. In July and August arrive early: the car parks fill.
  • Anthony Quinn Bay

    Anthony Quinn Bay

17 km, about 25 minutes, just past Faliraki. A small cove with limited parking; get there early.
  • Tsambika

    Tsambika

29 km, about 45 minutes, a beach on the east coast with parking close to the sand.
  • Seven Springs (Epta Piges)

    Seven Springs (Epta Piges)

28 km, about 35 minutes, inland from Kolymbia. A valley where you walk through a 186-metre tunnel, in ankle-deep water, to a small lake; a path above the tunnel is the dry way round. Parking by the taverna is limited.
  • Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes)

    Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes)

25 km, about 30 minutes, on the inland road between Paradisi and Theologos, so an easy first stop from the airport. The butterflies gather in summer, most of all in August. There is a small entry fee and free parking near the entrance; the site closes at the end of October until the next season.
  • Ancient Kamiros

    Ancient Kamiros

34 km, about 45 minutes along the west coast.
  • Kritinia castle

    Kritinia castle

48 km, about 1 hour, further down the west coast, with a car park at the castle. It goes well with Kamiros on the same day.
  • Monolithos castle

    Monolithos castle

74 km, about 1 hour 25 minutes, on the far south-west coast, past Embonas or Kritinia. Fuel is scarce between Kritinia and Apolakia, so fill up first.
  • Prasonisi

    Prasonisi

91 km, about 1 hour 55 minutes, via the east coast and Kattavia, then about 10 km south to the island's southern tip, where a sandy strip joins the cape to a small islet. It's a windsurfing and kitesurfing spot; the centres close in winter. Parking at the end of the road is free. Fill up at Gennadi or Kattavia.
