How you pick up your car
Picking up in town suits you if you arrived some other way and only want a car for part of your stay. You can't take a car into the Old Town or onto the harbour front. Since July 2025, retractable bollards at 11 entry points keep out every car without a permit, except for deliveries between 07:00 and 09:00, and visitors and hotel guests get no permit. The supplier brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. If you're staying inside the walls, the handover is at the nearest street a car can reach, which your hotel can name.
Driving and parking
Parking in Chania town
- Street parking around the centre is the municipal i-PARK system. It is paid Monday to Saturday, 07:00-21:00, for up to 4 hours, and free on Sundays and public holidays. Pay in the i-PARK CHANIA app or at the marked kiosks, and enter the plate in Latin letters.
- Prices: about €1 for an hour and €1.80 for two. Talos Square on the harbour is part of i-PARK, whatever older blogs say about it being free.
- Fines for unpaid parking are €30 since autumn 2025.
- For a full day or overnight: the municipal KYDON garage (Peridou 22, 320 spaces) is open around the clock, except on Sundays, when it opens from 16:30. The first hour costs €2.20 at the time of writing; the full rates are on the garage's price list.
- Free Park & Ride: car parks at Kladisos and at the former military camp by Markopoulou park, with free electric shuttle buses into the centre.
- Line colours: white is free, blue is paid (some blue bays are for residents only), and yellow means no parking.
- Summer evenings: the harbour car parks fill up. Park further out and walk in.
On the road
- The north coast road (VOAK) links Kissamos, Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion. Parts of it are narrow and old. Slower drivers pull onto the paved shoulder to let others pass, but the shoulder can end suddenly or be blocked, so keep an eye on it. Overtaking across solid lines is common; you don't have to join in.
- Tolls: none are charged in Crete at the time of writing. Work on the Chania-Heraklion section began in 2026, so expect roadworks; tolls are planned once finished sections open.
- Mountain roads: goats on the road are normal, even on main roads. After rain, watch for fallen rocks.
- Fuel: fill up before heading south or west. There is no station at Elafonisi, Sougia, Omalos or on the Balos track. The last ones are at Elos, Kissamos/Kaliviani, Paleochora, Askyfou and Chora Sfakion. Many stations close in the evening and on Sundays, and most are attendant-served, with no pay-at-pump after hours.
Practical tips
- Which car: a small car is the better choice here. You can't drive into the Old Town anyway, and village roads towards Elafonisi and in the hills are narrow. A 4x4 is only worth it if you plan mountain dirt tracks: none of the trips above needs one.
- Unpaved roads: many insurance policies exclude damage on unpaved roads (tyres, underbody), and some rental contracts forbid the Balos track outright. If Balos is on your list, ask the supplier before you book.
- When to arrive: in July and August, the car parks at Balos, Seitan Limania and Stavros are full by 09:00-10:00.
Driving rules in Greece
- Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
- Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
- Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
- Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
- In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
- Emergencies: call 112.
Places to visit by car

Balos lagoon
53 km, about 1½ hours. The last 9 km from Kaliviani is a gravel track, slow but passable in an ordinary car. A small fee per person is collected at the start of the track and parking is paid. From the car park it's a 20-30 minute walk down a rocky path, and longer back up. In July and August arrive before 09:00. Before driving the track, check that your rental's insurance covers unpaved roads (see Practical).
Balos by boat instead
drive to Kissamos port (42 km, about 50 minutes). Boats to Gramvousa and Balos leave around 10:30 from May to October and are cancelled in strong north winds.
Elafonisi
73 km, 1½-2 hours. The last stretch via Topolia and Elos is narrow and winding: easy in a small car, slow in a big one. Cars are not allowed into the protected beach zone, so use the marked car parks.
Falasarna
54 km, about an hour. A long sandy beach on the west coast, best at sunset.
Seitan Limania
22 km, about 35 minutes, on Akrotiri near the airport. The last stretch is narrow. The path down is steep and loose with no handrail, 10-15 minutes each way, so wear proper shoes. Roadside parking fills by 09:00 in summer.
Marathi and Stavros (Akrotiri)
both about 16-18 km, under half an hour. Marathi faces Souda Bay and stays calm when the north wind blows. Stavros has a free car park behind the beach that is full by mid-morning in July and August.
Samaria Gorge
the trailhead at Xyloskalo (Omalos) is 42 km away, about 50 minutes. The gorge is 16 km one way and ends at Agia Roumeli, which has no road. A car left at the top is therefore a problem: from Agia Roumeli the boats go to Chora Sfakion or Sougia, and Sfakia to Xyloskalo is over two hours by road. The simplest plan is to leave the car in Chania, take the morning KTEL bus up, and return by boat to Sfakia and the KTEL bus back. The gorge normally opens May to October. In October 2026 it was closed after storm damage, so check the official site (samaria-tickets.necca.gov.gr) before you go.
Lake Kournas
43 km, about 50 minutes, a short detour south of Georgioupoli off the coast road.
Rethymno
70 km, about 1 hour 20 minutes along the coast road: a day for the old town and the Venetian fortress.
Sfakia and Frangokastello
over the White Mountains via the Askyfou plateau and down the hairpins to Chora Sfakion (69 km, about 1½ hours), then on to the castle and beach at Frangokastello (77 km). Fill up at Askyfou or Sfakia.
Questions and answers
Can I drive to my hotel in Chania Old Town?
No. Since July 2025 bollards keep cars out of the Old Town and the harbour front, except for deliveries between 07:00 and 09:00. The supplier brings the car to the nearest street a car can reach, or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. You walk in with your luggage.
Where can I park in Chania?
Paid street parking (i-PARK) is charged Monday to Saturday 07:00-21:00, for up to 4 hours. For longer stays use the KYDON municipal garage on Peridou street, or the free Park & Ride at Kladisos or Markopoulou park, with free shuttle buses into the centre.
How far is Chania airport from the town?
About 15 km, 20-30 minutes by car. The supplier meets you on arrival, sends you directions to their office or sends a shuttle, and confirms which after booking. The airport car park is free for the first 20 minutes.
My ferry arrives at Souda early in the morning. Can I collect the car there?
Yes. Most overnight ferries from Piraeus arrive between about 05:30 and 07:00. Give the supplier your ship and arrival time when you book. They'll meet you off the ferry, send you directions to their office or send a shuttle, and confirm which after booking.
Can I drive to Balos with a rental car?
The last 9 km is a gravel track that ordinary cars manage slowly. The catch is insurance: many policies exclude unpaved roads, so ask the supplier before you book. Or drive to Kissamos port and take the boat.
Are there tolls on Crete?
Not at the time of writing. Roadworks have started on the Chania-Heraklion section, and tolls are planned once finished sections open.
