How you pick up your car

Gaios is the island's main village and port, and most of the hotels and rooms are here. The very centre is pedestrian and narrow. You can drive along the waterfront to drop off luggage, but not park there: the car parks are further back from the water. The supplier brings the car to your hotel or sends you directions to their office, and confirms which after booking. If you're staying in the pedestrian centre, the handover is at the nearest street a car can reach, and you walk in.

Picking up in the village suits you if you only want a car for part of your stay. Taxi boats to Antipaxos leave from the old harbour in the centre, so on a boat day the car can stay parked.

Driving and parking

Parking

  • Gaios: use the car parks behind the waterfront or the one at the new port, 10 minutes' walk from the centre. Most are free. A private car park in the centre charges by the hour.
  • Loggos: one road runs into the village from the Gaios side, along the narrow waterfront and back up to the main road. The village car park fills early in summer, and most people park along the road above the village and walk down.
  • Lakka: the lanes in the centre are tight. Park in the car parks at the edge of the village and walk in.

On the road

  • One main road runs the length of the island, about 10 km from Gaios to Lakka, with side roads down to Loggos and the east-coast beaches and out to the hamlets in the west. It is narrow and winding in places, and you share it with the bus and with scooters.
  • Side lanes narrow to a single track in places, so be ready to reverse to let someone pass.
  • Unpaved stretches: the last part of the road towards Tripitos, the road down to Erimitis beach and the track past the Lakka lighthouse towards Plani are unpaved. Many insurance policies exclude damage on unpaved roads, so ask the supplier before you drive them.
  • Fuel: the island has two petrol stations, both on the main road in its southern half: one at the top of Gaios and one near Magazia. There is none in Loggos or Lakka, so fill up when you pass.

Practical tips

  • Do you need a car? A bus links Gaios, Loggos and Lakka a few times a day, and there are few taxis, so book them ahead in summer. If you're staying in one of the three villages and swimming nearby, you can manage without a car. For a villa in the olive groves, the west-coast cliffs or the beaches between the villages, you need a car or a scooter.
  • Which car: a small one. Distances are short, the roads are narrow, and parking in the villages is tight. None of the trips above needs a 4x4.
  • Bringing a car: only the ferries from Igoumenitsa carry vehicles, and the boats from Corfu don't. A car fare starts at about €42 each way at the time of writing, which renting on the island saves.

Driving rules in Greece

  • Speed limits: in towns the limit has been 30 km/h since 1 January 2026, and 50 km/h on roads with two or more lanes in each direction, on one-way roads with two or more lanes and on roads with a central divider. Outside towns it is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Signs can set other limits.
  • Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l. It is 0.2 g/l for new drivers, and for motorcycle and moped riders.
  • Phones: hands-free only. Since the new traffic code of 2025, a first offence costs €350 and a 30-day licence suspension.
  • Helmets: compulsory on mopeds, motorcycles and quads, for the rider and the passenger.
  • In the car: a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher are compulsory. Check they're in the boot at pick-up.
  • Emergencies: call 112.

Places to visit by car

  • Erimitis cliffs

    Erimitis cliffs

about 5 km, 10 minutes, via Magazia. The white limestone cliffs on the west coast are the island's best-known place to watch the sunset. A bar-restaurant on the cliff top opens in the evenings and has its own parking. The church of Agioi Apostoloi, also near Magazia, looks over the same cliffs. The small beach below has no facilities, and the road down is steep and unpaved with very little parking, so walk the last part.
  • Tripitos arch

    Tripitos arch

about 2.5 km, 5 minutes, to Ozias, south of Gaios. Leave the car in the village and walk 10-15 minutes on a narrow, rocky path, steep in places, to a natural rock arch about 20 metres above the sea. Wear proper shoes. It is safer to look at the arch from the cliffs than to walk across it.
  • Mongonissi

    Mongonissi

about 4.5 km, 10 minutes, at the southern tip. The islet is joined to Paxos by a road, and its beach is sheltered from the wind.

  • Loggos

    Loggos

about 7.5 km, 10-15 minutes. A small harbour village on the east coast, with the beaches of Levrechio and Marmari a short walk away. Park above the village (see Driving).

  • Monodendri

    Monodendri

about 7 km, 10-15 minutes, on the east coast between Loggos and Lakka. An organised beach, with a car park just above it.

  • Lakka

    Lakka

about 7.5 km, 10-15 minutes, at the north end of the island, around a bay that forms the second-largest harbour on Paxos. Harami beach in the bay has a sandy bottom and shallow water, which suits children.
  • Antipaxos and the west-coast caves, by boat

Antipaxos and the west-coast caves, by boat

leave the car in Gaios. In summer, taxi boats leave from the old harbour in the centre about every half hour for Vrika and Voutoumi beaches on Antipaxos: 15-30 minutes at sea, with the last boats back in the late afternoon. The sea caves under the west-coast cliffs and the Ortholithos rock can only be seen from the water. Boat trips and small hire boats leave from Gaios, and the smallest boats need no licence.

Questions and answers

Is "Paxos Port" the same place as Gaios?

Almost. Paxos Port is the new ferry port at the north end of Gaios, where all the scheduled boats from Igoumenitsa and Corfu land, about 10 minutes' walk from the village centre. Choose Paxos Port to pick the car up when your boat arrives, and Gaios to have it brought to your hotel or to collect it at the supplier's office.

Can I bring a rental car over from Corfu?

Not directly. The boats from Corfu Town and Lefkimmi carry passengers only, and cars cross only on the ferries from Igoumenitsa on the mainland. Taking a car rented on Corfu would mean going via Igoumenitsa, so it's simpler to rent on Paxos.

Where do I park in Gaios?

Not on the waterfront, which is for loading only. Use the car parks behind the village or the one at the new port.

Is there a petrol station near Lakka or Loggos?

No. The island's two stations are in its southern half, at Gaios and near Magazia. Fill up before you head north.

How do I get to Antipaxos?

Only by boat. Taxi boats leave from the old harbour in Gaios through the summer and take 15-30 minutes. Park in Gaios before you go: there's little use for a car on Antipaxos.

Can I drive to Erimitis for the sunset?

Yes, to the top of the cliffs, about 10 minutes from Gaios via Magazia. The bar-restaurant there has parking. Walk down to the beach: the road is steep and unpaved, with very little parking.
